With so much in the news of late about the changing climate and our part in making that happen, many people are looking for ways to change that pattern. We are looking for sustainable energy sources that we can implement today.
You've heard the term, but what exactly do they mean when they talk about sustainable sources of energy? Well, in a nutshell, it means an energy source that won't run out, ever.
We've heard that the supply of oil that we use for most of our energy needs is dwindling. We need to find a cleaner alternative that will last forever.
Two of the most common, and promising, are solar power and wind power.
Solar power is generated by using panels that will absorb the sunlight and convert it into electricity.
Wind power uses wind turbines to gather the energy of the wind and convert that into electricity.
Both of these sources show a lot of promise even for household use. And both sources have their pros and cons.
Solar energy would work better in some areas than others. Obviously any region that has extended periods of sunny days would be a good candidate for solar power. The downside is that it won't generate any electricity when the sun goes down.
Wind power, on the other hand, can be used by many more regions. There is virtually no where on Earth that doesn't get wind at some time. The downside to this form of energy is that you need a wind turbine to generate electricity which can take up quite a bit of space.
The point is that even with today's technology there are still advances to be made in sustainable energy sources. But we have come far enough that it makes sense to start utilizing these sources right now. We can save ourselves some money not to mention saving a little thing called Earth.
